Understanding Coating Resins: Alkyd, Amino, and HMMM Resins

A practical overview of alkyd resins, amino cross-linkers, and HMMM for industrial finishes — useful context when pairing binders with TiO₂ and organic pigments.

Resins bind pigments, adhere to substrates, and cure into protective films. Even when sourcing colorants from Chem Horizons — such as rutile TiO₂ or organic pigments — the resin system still decides gloss, hardness, and chemical resistance.

Alkyd resins

Alkyds are polyester resins modified with fatty acids. They remain common in architectural and industrial finishes for gloss retention, application ease, and adhesion. Cure can be oxidative (air-dry) or combined with amino resins in baking systems.

Amino cross-linkers and HMMM

Baking finishes (OEM, coil) often use melamine- or urea-formaldehyde amino resins. Hexamethoxymethylmelamine (HMMM) is a highly alkylated amino resin valued for low viscosity, stability, and efficient cross-linking — yielding hard yet flexible chemical-resistant films.
