Hexachloroethane (C₂Cl₆), also known as carbon hexachloride or perchloroethane (CAS: 67-72-1), is a white crystalline non-flammable solid with a characteristic camphor-like aroma. It sublimes at approximately 186.8 °C without melting at atmospheric pressure, is virtually insoluble in water, and dissolves readily in organic solvents including trichloroethylene, ethanol, ether, and benzene.
In the aluminum and light alloy industry, molten aluminum absorbs significant quantities of hydrogen gas, which can cause micro-porosity and structural failure in finished castings. Introducing hexachloroethane in compressed tablet form releases active chlorine micro-bubbles via controlled thermal decomposition. These scavenge dissolved hydrogen, separate stubborn oxide inclusions, and float dry dross to the surface for clean skimming.
Beyond foundry metallurgy, hexachloroethane plays a crucial role in pyrotechnic screening clouds, acting as an oxidizer/chlorinating reactant with powdered zinc and aluminum, as a vulcanization accelerator in rubber compounds, and as an anthelmintic and mothproofing intermediate.
